If jumping and aerial performance is your primary motivation, kitesurfing is the more appropriate sport.
Both sports have serious and sophisticated wave-riding disciplines, and the answer depends partly on wave type and partly on riding style preference. Windsurfing wave riding โ particularly as practised at Ho’okipa or in locations with large, powerful surf โ is considered by many practitioners to be the most technically demanding and physically rewarding form of wave riding available in any board sport. The direct connection between rider, rig, and board enables a carving, engaged style of wave riding that many experienced riders describe as unmatched. Kitesurfing wave riding offers greater freedom of movement on the wave (the kite can be depowered to near-zero, allowing the rider to surf the wave almost without kite influence) and easier downwind wave selection. For pure wave surfing sensation in serious surf, many experienced dual-sport riders still prefer windsurfing; for accessibility and flexibility in a wider range of wave conditions, kitesurfing is increasingly competitive.
Windsurfing’s mainstream participation numbers declined significantly through the 2000s and 2010s as kitesurfing grew rapidly, and many beaches that were once dominated by windsurfers now see far more kites. However, “dying out” significantly overstates the case โ windsurfing remains an Olympic sport, maintains a strong PWA World Tour professional circuit, and retains a passionate global community of practitioners. The sport’s participation base has become more concentrated among committed, experienced riders rather than casual participants, which has arguably improved the average quality of riding visible at popular locations. Windsurfing’s integration with hydrofoiling has also opened new performance possibilities that have attracted a younger generation back to the discipline. The sport is contracting in volume but not in depth, and the community that remains is arguably more technically engaged than at any point in the sport’s history.
